Smithdown Road

Living around Wavertree and Greenbank

Smithdown Road is one of the most recognisable student areas in Liverpool, known for its high-energy atmosphere and great selection of food and drink spots.

Make our Smithdown student accommodation your home, and enjoy the atmosphere first-hand. The road sits within the wider Wavertree student area, and the Greenbank end gives you close contact with greenery (for those much-needed study breaks!)

Smithdown student housing is usually shared, and you’ll find plenty of beautiful Victorian conversions on and off the road. Getting to and from Smithdown is straightforward.

Buses run regularly along the road, with routes such as the 86 and 699 heading towards the city centre. Many students also walk or cycle to campus, depending on where they’re based.

What’s nearby?

For food and drink, those living in our Smithdown student accommodation are spoilt for choice! You’ll see favourites like The Brookhouse, plus spots like BlackCat, Kelly’s Dispensary and Handyman Supermarket for bar-hopping.

If you’re more brunch than pints, The Tavern Company is a Smithdown classic, and there are plenty of reliable eats nearby too, including Pizza Hut, Spitroast (for freshly-cooked chicken and chips) and LEAF for loose-leaf teas and big breakfasts.

When you need to shop, our student homes are en route to a local Tesco, Aldi and ASDA. You’ll come across smaller shops for top-ups, including international mini-markets and quick-stop convenience stores.

If you need specialist groceries, Purple Carrot (Liverpool’s first vegan and organic supermarket) can also be found along Smithdown Road. Houses in the area are in great proximity to some of the best green spaces south of the city.

If you enjoy running, Sefton Park is a 20-minute walk away from Smithdown, where you can stop for a picnic near the Palm House or head to Greenbank Park for a lakeside wander. When you want a change of scenery, Princes Park is close as well.

Smithdown Road FAQs

Is Smithdown Road a safe area for students?

Yes, Smithdown Road is a very busy, student-heavy area. You’re surrounded by a large student community, and with plenty of activity along the main road, residents have historically reported feeling safe.

It’s still sensible to use the usual city precautions (well-lit routes at night, keep valuables secure, and know who to contact on campus if you ever feel worried).

How far is it to the University of Liverpool and LJMU?

It depends on where you are along Smithdown Road, but as a rough guide, you’re looking at around 1.5 miles to the University of Liverpool (about a 30-minute walk, or around 15 minutes by bus on services including the 86 routes and 699).

Liverpool John Moores University is approximately 2.1 miles from our student homes on Smithdown Road (a 50-minute walk, or roughly 23 minutes by bus, depending on the route and traffic).

Is there car parking available nearby?

Parking is mostly on-street around Smithdown and nearby residential roads, but availability and restrictions vary. The ease of parking on Smithdown Road (compared to the city centre) can make this location better for those bringing a car to university.

Are these properties suitable for large groups?

Absolutely, this Smithdown is the prime location for large group living in Liverpool!

Smithdown is well-known for its converted Victorian terraced houses. We offer a wide range of 6, 7, and even 8-bedroom properties, so no one is left out of life at our student homes on Smithdown Road.

Does the rent include a cleaning service?

Yes! Keeping on top of cleaning as a busy student can be difficult, so your rent charges include a free regular cleaning service for communal areas.
