Make your dorm a home with our clever decorating techniques.
Student accommodation, while often furnished with high-quality beds and personal desks, may not feel like your own (until you’ve put your decorative stamp on it!)
After all, this is the room where you’ll sleep and study, potentially for the next three terms. Getting a head start on your interior decor is a worthwhile investment. Plus, some purchases that may seem purely decorative (e.g., pinboard, new bedding) are actually necessary.
So, for all the best dorm room decor ideas, stay with Luxury Student Homes.
Cork pinboards are relatively inexpensive and can be found in a stationery or design shop. They’re great for holding photos, quotes, and postcards, which makes them the perfect place for mementoes (and revision notes!).
They’re also great places to put calendars or important reminders. For an even more budget-friendly solution, consider creating a DIY pinboard using cork tiles. You can glue them together and customise them to fit the specific size of your wall.
Who doesn’t love a throw pillow?
Put personal comfort first by decorating your bed or seating area with plush pillows. Available in most home decor shops (and even supermarkets), these low-cost items are a great way to incorporate more of your favourite patterns, colours, and prints.
Don’t overlook charity shops and online platforms like Etsy, where you may be able to find unique, handcrafted items. Again, if you’re on a really tight budget, consider making your own pillow covers using fabric and stuffing from a fabric shop!
An arts and crafts night with your new housemates is a great way to get the conversation flowing!
No one likes the big light, so be sure to kit your room with plenty of LEDs. Also known as ‘fairy lights,’ these energy-efficient bulbs can turn even the darkest of rooms into cosy retreats.
Apply LED strip lights along the edges of your ceiling, under shelves, or around your desk to introduce a gentle glow (just be sure they don’t cause any damage to your student property!
For a more playful lighting experience, drape LED fairy lights over your bed frame, around windows, or across your pinboard. If there is only one or two power outlets available, we recommend opting for battery-operated LEDs.
A desk hutch is a piece of furniture that looks similar to shelves or cabinets.
Typically made from wood, it’s designed to sit on top of your desk to provide extra storage room. If you’re someone who keeps a messy workspace, a desk hutch will offer more space for gadgets, stationery, and even books.
You can purchase them from retailers like Amazon for cheap, or if there’s any spare wood lying around, you can get hands-on and make one of your own!
The right rug can bring your room from 0 to 100. Before you even think about colour or style, first, you must determine the perfect size. A rug that’s too small can make the room feel disjointed, while one that’s too large may overwhelm the space.
We recommend shopping for a rug that fits well under key furniture pieces, such as your bed or desk. Then, the fun begins! Shop for colours and patterns that complement your room’s existing scheme for a more unified look.
If you’ve got lots of housemates, choose a rug that’s easy to clean. High-traffic areas will always be dirtier, so machine-washable or low-pile rugs will be the most practical options.
Many underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep. When we’re well-rested, our brains function at 110%, which means greater concentration, memorisation, and, ultimately, better performance in academic tasks.
To make sure you’re achieving maximum potential, new bedding can make a big difference. Treat yourself to some luxury bedding, including a duvet, pillowcases, and perhaps a blanket or two!
It’s a truth universally acknowledged that plants make us happier (even if they’re fake).
Bringing greenery into your dorm room is an excellent way to add freshness: use hanging plants or place them on wall-mounted shelves (where they’ll get plenty of sunlight).
But as you’ll be busy running to and from campus, we recommend opting for low-maintenance plants that require minimal care. Some options include succulents, aloe vera, and snake plants.
