How to survive freshers’ week

Freshers’ week is the first week of the academic year in university and is an event filled with events ideal for new students to get to know the city, nights out and a great opportunity to make new friends. Once again its just around the corner! So here are our top tips on how to survive freshers’ week 2017.

Move in early, get to know people:

Make sure to get your stuff moved in as soon as possible, as you’ll certainly have a lot to do, especially if you have to move a long distance away from home. Making friends amongst other freshers is easy as long as you put the effort in! Just remember that everyone else is just as nervous as you and are eager to make friends too. If you’re in halls, make sure you keep your door open when you are moving in and get to know the neighbours.

Budget your money:

Like many freshers if you want to go out every single night, be sure to budget your money wisely, that student loan has to last you the entire semester! Plan in advance how much you are willing to spend each week and delegate a budget. Only take that amount with you to avoid losing track of your spending. Remember, Christmas is just around the corner and presents, clothes, food and parties can get expensive!

Top tip: get an NUS card as soon as possible and put it to good use! Your NUS card entitles you to a wide variety of student discounts in stores, restaurants and more.

Join societies that interest you:

Sign up for as many things as you fancy; until you try a few sessions, you won’t know which societies are well run and which activities you will enjoy. Most university societies charge a small fee. You don’t have to pay up front, although you may receive a small discount if you do. Ask about taster events and put your name down for the mailing list or the Facebook group

Stay safe!:

  • Familiarise yourself with your campus before you head out on the town, there is nothing worse than being lost in the dark!
  • If you’re in a club, never leave your drink unattended at any time.
  • There’s safety in numbers, so stick with your group of friends.
  • All unis have a counselling service, and many have a Nightline/Helpline.
