Yes, McDonald’s is open late. So is every other chain you already know. But Liverpool has a genuinely brilliant independent food scene, and a lot of it is available well into the evening and beyond. Whether you’re heading home after a night out in Liverpool, powering through a library all-nighter, or just craving something decent after a late lecture, there are far better options than defaulting to the nearest fast-food chain, and most of them won’t cost you much more.
This guide covers the independents and local spots worth knowing about, split into two honest sections: venues genuinely open past 11pm, and great evening spots that are perfect if you’re eating before midnight. Opening hours are based on current listings, but always worth a quick check before you head out.

These are the places actually open when most restaurants have long since closed.
Hours: City Centre — daily 11am–4am (5am Fri–Sat) | Smithdown Road — daily 11am–3am
If you’re looking for a proper burger rather than a chain, Ohannes is the answer, and the hours make it genuinely one of the best late-night options in Liverpool. The city centre branch on Cases Street stays open until 4am every night (5am at weekends), and the Smithdown Road branch runs until 3am, so whichever side of town you’re on, it’s there when most places aren’t. The atmosphere is cosy and inviting, and the burgers are made with 100% British beef, cooked on a BBQ-style grill rather than a flat press, plus the sauces are made in-house daily. The menu covers beef, chicken and veggie options across a range of builds, from a classic cheese to our go-to Mexi Burger loaded with salsa, jalapeños and sriracha mayo.
Hours: Mon–Thu 11am–11:30pm | Fri–Sat 11am–2am | Sun 12pm–11:30pm
One of the few places in Liverpool city centre genuinely open until 2am at weekends. American Pizza Slice sells New York, Detroit and Chicago-style pizza by the slice from their Bold Street location, so you can grab one on the go or sit in. Reviewers regularly highlight the range of vegetarian options and the gluten-free pizza as a standout. The slice-and-deal format makes it easy for groups to mix and match without committing to a whole pizza. We love that each slice is reasonably priced and a great size, meaning it can work out cheaper than the overpriced pizza chain restaurants.
Hours: Daily 9am–4am
The Leece Street city centre branch is the one to know for late nights, open until 4am every day of the week. Nabzy’s is a Liverpool student staple for fried chicken, wings and meal deals, and has even been voted the number one student takeaway in the UK.
Hours: Mon 9am–10pm | Tue & Wed 9am-11pm | Thu 9am-12pm | Fri–Sat 9am–1am | Sun 10am–10:00pm
Bold Street spot serving burgers, breakfasts, desserts and cocktails. Often described as a hybrid between a late diner and a bar, suitable for sitting down properly after an evening out rather than grabbing something quickly.
Hours: Mon–Sun 4pm–midnight
Open until midnight every day, Friend’s Kebabs is a student favourite spot on Smithdown Road. The standout is the naan bread, which is made fresh in the clay pit oven while you wait – which is my reason to come here over other kebab shops. Portions are large and prices are low for the quality on offer. The menu covers mixed kebabs, chicken, lamb chops and more, all with house-made sauces.
Hours: Daily from ~4pm, open until around 12:30am
Right on Smithdown Road, Greenbank Fish Bar covers the classic late-night bases: fish and chips, kebabs, pizza and burgers, with meal deals available across the menu. It’s open until around 12:30am according to current listings, making it one of the more genuinely post-Brookhouse night-out options. The menu is broader than the name suggests, so it works whether you’re after a traditional chippy meal or something different.
Hours: Thu–Sat 12pm–midnight | Sun–Wed 12pm–9pm
Go Taco on Lodge Lane is well worth a visit if you’re out on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night when it stays open until midnight. The menu centres on birria tacos, slow-cooked beef or chicken served with a tub of rich birria stock for dipping, alongside quesadillas, loaded nachos and meal deals that bundle tacos, nachos and a drink together. The box deals in particular offer strong value for the price, making it a good option when you want something more interesting than the usual late-night burger or kebab rotation.
These spots typically close between 9pm and 11pm, not post-club options, but brilliant for dinner before a night out, a post-library meal, or a midweek catch-up. Plan ahead and they’re some of the best food Liverpool has to offer.
Hours: Tue–Thu 4pm–10:30pm | Fri–Sat 12pm–11pm | Sun 2pm–10:30pm | Mon closed
The UK’s first poutine restaurant, just off the city centre on Hardman Street. The menu runs to over ten variations of the Canadian classic – chips, cheese curds and homemade gravy, with toppings ranging from maple-glazed chicken and slow-cooked brisket to a straight-up Original Poutine. There are solid vegan options too, including vegan versions of the most popular dishes. The Original is the entry point for the uninitiated, but most regulars end up on one of the loaded versions. Worth noting that it’s a small venue, so walk-ins with a large group may need to take food away.
Hours: Wed–Thu 5pm–10pm | Fri 12pm–11pm | Sat 11am–11pm | Sun 11am–9pm
Liverpool’s first street food market, set in the old Cains Brewery in the Baltic Triangle. Rotating independent traders cover a wide range of pizzas, Thai food, Turkish grill, vegan options, desserts and more, alongside bars and regular live music. It’s a good option for groups where everyone wants something different, and Friday and Saturday evenings push the latest closing time to 11pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday. This place is the night out, not just a post-clubbing stop-off.
Mon–Fri 5pm–10pm | Sat & Sun 1pm–10pm
Asian street-food dishes – salt and pepper chicken, katsu curries, rice bowls, at student-friendly prices. A casual option on the main Smithdown Rd strip.
Hours: Mon–Thu 5pm–9pm | Fri & Sat 5pm–10pm
Wood-fired Neapolitan pizza on Smithdown Road, frequently recommended by students as it’s one of the best pizzerias in Liverpool, not just Wavertree.
Hours: Mon–Thu 4pm–12am | Fri-Sun 12pm–12am (Food served till 10pm)
With drinks prices that are on a par with Wetherspoons and pub-grub style food served until 10pm, covering burgers, salt-and-pepper fries and pizza, Kelly’s is a favourite with Wavertree student residents, who can easily walk home afterwards.
